AI Thread Summary
Blu-ray is anticipated to become the new standard for media, especially with the emergence of HD-DVD as a competitor. The expected launch of HD-DVD players, priced around $1,000, suggests a simultaneous market introduction. Blu-ray offers superior picture quality, but users will need an HD television to fully benefit from its high-definition capabilities. The transition to Blu-ray poses challenges for collectors, as many may need to repurchase their existing DVD collections in the new format. However, Blu-ray's strong backing from 11 major companies indicates it is likely to dominate the market over HD-DVD.

So does anyone know around when blu-ray will become the new standard for media? Also how much of a difference will the quality be?

I've heard of it's competitor HD-dvd coming out next year. With the HD-dvd player selling for about $1,000. I can only speculate that it will be at the same time.

Quality wise, from the articles I've read the picture quality will be better but you'll have to get an HD tv to fully take advantage of the high def capabilities.

This is also unfortunate for moviephiles such as me, I've accumulated an estimated 100+ dvd's so far which means that I may have to buy the same 100 movies in HD-dvd or Blu- ray format which I won't be doing

I don't think blu-ray will have any trouble with competition, it has like 11 big name companies backing it up.

In my discussions elsewhere, I've noticed a lot of disagreement regarding AI. A question that comes up is, "Is AI hype?" Unfortunately, when this question is asked, the one asking, as far as I can tell, may mean one of three things which can lead to lots of confusion. I'll list them out now for clarity. 1. Can AI do everything a human can do and how close are we to that? 2. Are corporations and governments using the promise of AI to gain more power for themselves? 3. Are AI and transhumans...
Sorry if 'Profile Badge' is not the correct term. I have an MS 365 subscription and I've noticed on my Word documents the small circle with my initials in it is sometimes different in colour document to document (it's the circle at the top right of the doc, that, when you hover over it it tells you you're signed in; if you click on it you get a bit more info). Last night I had four docs with a red circle, one with blue. When I closed the blue and opened it again it was red. Today I have 3...
