AI Thread Summary
To determine the initial speed at which Bruce must throw the bagels for Henrietta to catch them, the problem requires calculating the time it takes for the bagels to fall 48.5 meters while considering Henrietta's jogging speed of 3.90 m/s. The discussion highlights confusion about whether to use relative velocity equations and how to approach the problem using horizontal and vertical motion equations. The key equations involve the vertical drop due to gravity and the horizontal distance covered by Henrietta during the time the bagels are in the air. Ultimately, solving these equations will provide both the necessary throwing speed and the location where Henrietta catches the bagels.

Homework Statement

Henrietta is going off to her physics class, jogging down the sidewalk at a speed of 3.90 m/s. Her husband Bruce suddenly realized that she left in such a hurry that she forgot her lunch of bagels, so he runs to the window of their apartment, which is a height of 48.5 m above the street level and directly above the sidewalk (SO I AM GUESSING IT IS 48.5 METERS ABOVE THE SIDEWALK, REALLY BAD WORDING) to throw them to her. Bruce throws them horizontally at a time 9.00 s after Henrietta has passed below the window and she catches them on the run. You can ignore air resistance.

a. With what initial speed must Bruce throw the bagels so Henrietta can catch them before they hit the ground?

b. Where is henrietta when she catch the bagels?

Homework Equations

y= -48.5 m
Vo= 3.90 m/s
and she took 9 seconds to walk down below the window.

The Attempt at a Solution

I made a x and y direction table but am totally lost. I was thinking that you would need to use the relative velocity equations but I don't know whether the bagels would be relative to the ground or to henrietta. So, if you could please guide me in a direction, that would be great. THANKS for any help.

velocity of lunch*T = v of her wife * 9 + v of her wife * T

and using h = 0.5gT^2

find T

thanks for guiding me. I appreciate it alot.

Kindly see the attached pdf. My attempt to solve it, is in it. I'm wondering if my solution is right. My idea is this: At any point of time, the ball may be assumed to be at an incline which is at an angle of θ(kindly see both the pics in the pdf file). The value of θ will continuously change and so will the value of friction. I'm not able to figure out, why my solution is wrong, if it is wrong .
TL;DR Summary: I came across this question from a Sri Lankan A-level textbook. Question - An ice cube with a length of 10 cm is immersed in water at 0 °C. An observer observes the ice cube from the water, and it seems to be 7.75 cm long. If the refractive index of water is 4/3, find the height of the ice cube immersed in the water. I could not understand how the apparent height of the ice cube in the water depends on the height of the ice cube immersed in the water. Does anyone have an...
