AI Thread Summary
Completing a PhD in computational materials science can serve as a strong foundation for transitioning into educational research. Engaging in a literature search to identify specific problems in education is a recommended first step. Networking with established researchers in the field can help validate expertise and open collaboration opportunities. Current teaching experiences at a polytechnic can enhance understanding of educational methodologies and learning processes. Balancing a PhD with a role as a professor in a college is feasible and can enrich educational research endeavors. Notable figures in educational research, such as Scott Freeman, exemplify successful interdisciplinary transitions, highlighting the potential for integrating scientific backgrounds with educational innovation.

I'm about to complete a PhD in computational materials science.

However, moving on, educational research seems interesting to me. What are some ways in which I can make the move? Start doing a literature search on my own, then when I've identified a problem, then knock on someone's doors and prove to him that I know enough to carry on?

Right now I am earning my keep by doing teaching in a polytechnic, and improving the way teaching is done and understanding how people learn has piqued my interest.

You can most likely complete your PhD and do this research while being a professor in a college. Scott Freeman, a biologist originally if I recall correctly, is very into educational research for example.

TL;DR Summary: I want to do a PhD in applied math but I hate group theory, is this a big problem? Hello, I am a second-year math and physics double major with a minor in data science. I just finished group theory (today actually), and it was my least favorite class in all of university so far. It doesn't interest me, and I am also very bad at it compared to other math courses I have done. The other courses I have done are calculus I-III, ODEs, Linear Algebra, and Prob/Stats. Is it a...
