AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers around the book "Sustainable Energy – Without the Hot Air," which focuses on alternative energy and provides a detailed analysis of the numbers related to energy consumption and carbon footprint reduction. The book, authored by a physicist, is available for free download at the website withouthotair.com, despite the site's less-than-stellar graphic design. Users emphasize the book's informative nature, including valuable data and graphs, while also noting its engaging writing style. An interesting book not so much about global warming but alternate energy and an analysis of the numbers behind it - from a physicist.

The book is now available as a free download from http://www.withouthotair.com/
Ignore the physicist grade graphic design of the website - the book is much better than this, with a lot of very useful data and graphs. It's also an entertaining read.

Disclaimer - I used to work in the group next door to this guy. Even by Cambridge physics dept standards he is a seriously smart cookie.

(didn't we used to have a book review section ?)

Ways to reduce carbon footprint--sensible, with numbers

http://www.withouthotair.com/

Princeton astrophysicist David Hogg blogs that he recently gave a seminar talk at Stanford by wire because the talks organizer is looking for ways to cut carbon.
Hogg referred in passing to a book I wasn't familiar with, as the "bible" of ways that technology and lifestyle changes can reduce emissions ("Sustainable energy without the hot air")

What is your impression of this "bible"? The pdf can be downloaded free, and a paper edition is on sale. However a lot of information is directly available in html at the website. Maybe the first question to ask is how does the website look, quality-wise. Can one recommend the withouthotair link?

Similar to the 2024 thread, here I start the 2025 thread. As always it is getting increasingly difficult to predict, so I will make a list based on other article predictions. You can also leave your prediction here. Here are the predictions of 2024 that did not make it: Peter Shor, David Deutsch and all the rest of the quantum computing community (various sources) Pablo Jarrillo Herrero, Allan McDonald and Rafi Bistritzer for magic angle in twisted graphene (various sources) Christoph...
Thread 'My experience as a hostage'
I believe it was the summer of 2001 that I made a trip to Peru for my work. I was a private contractor doing automation engineering and programming for various companies, including Frito Lay. Frito had purchased a snack food plant near Lima, Peru, and sent me down to oversee the upgrades to the systems and the startup. Peru was still suffering the ills of a recent civil war and I knew it was dicey, but the money was too good to pass up. It was a long trip to Lima; about 14 hours of airtime...
