AI Thread Summary
Higher alkyl sulphates are a type of surfactant commonly used in cleaning products. The term "alkyl" refers to a hydrocarbon chain, while "sulphate" indicates the presence of a sulphate group. The "higher" designation typically refers to the length of the carbon chain, which can influence the properties of the surfactant, such as its effectiveness and biodegradability. Longer carbon chains generally enhance the surfactant's ability to remove dirt and grease but may also affect its environmental impact. Understanding these components is essential for assessing the safety and efficacy of cleaning products.

Hey.
I was looking at the chemicals in a certain cleaning product, and there was one that i am unfamiliar with (and couldn't really find relevant information about). The product has been claimed to contain "Higher alkyl sulphates". What does this refer to? What are alkyl sulphates, and what does the "higher" refer to?

Thanks in advance.
Dan.

PS. I am a first year engineering student and have yet to take any chemistry units, so my chemistry knowledge doesn't go past high school chem.

It is probably in reference to the carbon number.
