SUMMARY

This discussion centers on finding books similar to P. Orlov's "Fundamentals of Machine Design" volumes 1, 2, and 3. Participants emphasize the importance of visual aids in design literature, specifically books that illustrate both flawed designs and improved solutions. While several recommendations exist, they often focus on narrower subjects, necessitating a clear specification of the reader's interests. Additionally, there is mention of the availability of Orlov's works through archive.com, although access issues were noted.

PREREQUISITES
  • Familiarity with P. Orlov's "Fundamentals of Machine Design" series
  • Understanding of design principles in engineering
  • Knowledge of visual documentation in technical literature
  • Basic research skills for locating academic texts
NEXT STEPS
  • Research books that focus on design principles with visual comparisons, such as "Engineering Design: A Systematic Approach" by G. Pahl.
  • Explore resources on step-wise refinement in engineering design.
  • Investigate alternative platforms for accessing engineering texts, especially if archive.com is down.
  • Look into specific areas of interest within machine design to narrow down book recommendations.

Hi. I have a problem and I will be so grateful if someone can help me with this.

I would like to know are there books that are similar to P.Orlov: Fundamentals of machine design 1,2 and 3. The book should include pictures of what is wrong and better solution of certain design.
Thank you in advance.

Welcome to PF.
Improving reliability while reducing the weight and the cost of manufacture are common themes in engineering. Orlov presented an excellent approach to design through step-wise refinement.
There are some similar books but they are about narrower subjects, so you will need to specify your special areas of interest.

I assume you have copies of Orlov from the MIR book site, if I remember correctly, via archive.com.
I have the four bound volumes of the English translation, and ebook copies of the first three, but could find no ebook of Volume_4.pdf.
Archive.com is down at the moment. Do you have any links to the volumes for others ?
