AI Thread Summary
Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, is recognized as the unofficial start of the Christmas shopping season in the U.S. The term "Black Friday" refers to retailers moving from "red" (loss) to "black" (profit) in their financial records. Despite its popularity, many participants express disdain for the chaotic shopping environment, with some preferring to avoid malls altogether due to overcrowding and consumerism. There are discussions about the perceived commercialization of the holiday and the notion that shopping on this day is more about hype than actual savings. Some individuals advocate for shopping on December 26 instead, citing better deals and less stress. Overall, the sentiment leans towards skepticism about the necessity and value of Black Friday shopping.

I have never heard of a Black Friday. I guess it's an American thing?

I don't know why its "black", but the day after thanksgiving is the busiest shopping day of the year (in US)

It's an American woman thing. The only thing I'm going to buy is beer.

Oh. I was going to post the same thing. "What is black Friday? Why is it black? Isn't that day Thanksgiving or something?" Then I didn't because I Thought I was the odd one out and everybody else knew. I now pose the same questions! Why is it black? Why buy on that day? No taxes or something?

It's the "official" start of the Christmas season.

I think they call it black friday in reference to the fact that many retailer's bottom lines cross over from "red" (negative) into the "black" (positive) meaning they are making a profit, based on this weekend

Which it the exact reason I STAY HOME!

Spending money on something I do not need just because it is $5 less then normal is not my idea of savings.

Well, it sounds like a holiday, but for shopping. A holiday, some made up reason to go have fun.

Shopping in over crowed malls is fun?

The "Black" in "Black Friday" refers to ink in the ledger books (assuming anyone uses ledger books these days) as opposed to "Red Ink", which was traditionally used to mark a negative balance. The Friday after Thanksgiving and sale period between Thanksgiving and Christmas usually determines profitability for many commerical places.

I am NOT going shopping.

Over and over I hear the news about this day, on how it is supposed to be the busiest shopping day of the year, when the busiest shopping day is always actually the day before Christmas (in US). The advertising and sales forces that dominate and direct US culture decided that this Friday after Thanksgiving should be the busiest day, then they announced that it "is" (when it wasn't) and subsequently most Americans believe that it is, and therefore they try to make it so.

These are the same folks who don't know who they will vote for until they know who will win.

I call it "black" because it usually demonstrates the lowest possible level humans can sink to in their quest for more crap. The displays of sheer "consumerism gluttony" is pretty appalling IMO.

I agree with Russ. It's an American woman thing that the business suits picked up on and have exploited to the hilt.

Black Friday is the start of the Christmas shopping season.

Men have football.

Women have full contact shopping.

When you compare the two sports, it's obvious that men are wimps.

Ironically, the prize in this sport is that the men usually get a really cool Christmas gift while the women usually get whatever happens to be left in the store on Christmas eve. Even a toilet brush is a nice gift if it's wrapped nicely enough. Remember, it's the thought that counts.

I need a toilet brush. I didn't move mine.

Can I have a man with that?

What does it have to do with being a woman thing? I stay home too. I don't know how it's still the busiest shopping day of the year since everyone I know stays as far away from malls as possible because they don't want to be out in crowded stores.

I think the best day to go shopping and get great sale prices is Dec. 26.

I've already done most of my Christmas shopping...I HATE going to malls between Thanksgiving and Christmas, so try to do as much shopping as possible in early November.

I'd never heard of black friday before...but it sounds like a good day to stay at home and be nowhere near a shopping mall. I can't stand shopping in the first place...it is a million times worse when the stores are wall to wall people

I saw that there was a three mile backup on the I-5, and the parking lots at the mall of interest were full by 5AM this morning. Some stores opened at midnight.

I had to wake up at 5:50am to arrive at the Old navy since they were giving away free ipods to those who spent $20 or more. I arrived around 6am and they were already all gone :frown:

I went to a grocery store only because I had too. I avoid Black Friday like it's the Black Plague.

I only know one person who was braving shopping yesterday...he was buying a new bike, and had gone out to get it earlier in the week and was told it would be $100 off if he went Friday instead. He's never experienced Black Friday shopping before. I'd have to think long and hard over whether going anywhere near a store on Black Friday was worth $100.

I slept in, put up the rest of my Christmas decorations (I started early with the tree this year), ate leftovers, and took a long hot bath while reading a trashy novel. Much better than shopping. :approve:
