What creates magnetic fields

  1. Aug 27, 2012 #1
what creates magnetic fields, magnetic poles or currents? are those theories equivalent mathematically? i read in Griffiths currents are the sole source of magnetic fields but in another book it said those theories are equivalent. has it been proved the theory of magnetic poles is wrong/ or is it just still a hypothesis?

people often use magnetic monopoles in equations, just because it makes things easier. In reality, there are only currents, no magnetic monopoles. But they can cause approximately the same magnetic fields, which is why magnetic monopoles are sometimes used in equations.
