What exactly is the solenoid shape? Is it just the coil?

[Mr_Bojingles]

What exactly is the solenoid shape? Is it just the shape of the coil with the core inside or do they refer to the shape of the magnetic field surrounding the coil??

Is this the solenoid, just the coil?

Or are they talking about the magnetic field that surrounds the coil?

[ice109]

the former

Thanks.
