AI Thread Summary
Inside a black hole, a singularity is a point where the laws of physics as currently understood cease to function. This breakdown occurs because our existing theories, such as relativity and quantum mechanics, do not adequately describe conditions at this extreme point. The singularity challenges our understanding, suggesting that future advancements in physics may redefine these laws. There is also the possibility that current equations regarding black holes could be incorrect, leading to a different understanding of singularities. Ultimately, the nature of singularities remains one of the most profound mysteries in astrophysics.

I have read that inside a black hole there is a point called "singularity", where all the laws of physics break down. But exactly what does that mean?

hi mdmaaz! :smile:

it means that the laws of physics as we know them break down …

once we've managed to unite relativity and quantum theory, our laws of physics will be different, and we may be able to apply them to the singularity

(alternatively, maybe our black hole equation will turn out to be wrong, and the singularity isn't exactly what we think it is)

To expand on what tiny-tim said, we say a singularity occurs when our laws of physics are no longer well defined. For example, in Newtonian physics, the gravitational force is expressed as:
F\sim\frac{1}{r^2}
When r=0, this equation is undefined (since division by zero is not defined), or we say that it is singular. I.e. there is a singularity at r=0. This is analogous to what happens with a black hole.

Now that they have shared their findings with the larger community someone else might find an explanation - or maybe it was actually made by life.
TL;DR Summary: In 3 years, the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) telescope (or rather, a system of telescopes) should be put into operation. In case of failure to detect alien signals, it will further expand the radius of the so-called silence (or rather, radio silence) of the Universe. Is there any sense in this or is blissful ignorance better? In 3 years, the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) telescope (or rather, a system of telescopes) should be put into operation. Your posts, clips and photos may by all means include scientific information; that does not make it less beautiful to me (n.b. the posts must of course comply with the PF guidelines, i.e. regarding science, only mainstream science is allowed, fringe/pseudoscience is not allowed). n.b.
