AI Thread Summary
M Theory is a theoretical framework in physics that unifies various string theories, suggesting that fundamental particles are not zero-dimensional points but rather one-dimensional strings. It posits the existence of multiple dimensions beyond the familiar four, which can help explain the fundamental forces of nature. Stephen Hawking's "The Universe in a Nutshell" offers a brief overview of M Theory, particularly in its third chapter. For a more in-depth understanding, works by Brian Greene, such as "The Elegant Universe," and Michio Kaku are recommended. M Theory remains a complex and evolving area of study in theoretical physics.

i overheard someone talking about something called the M theory. They mentioned the string theory too (which i know about), but I have no idea what M theory is. Can someone please inform me?

Hmmmm

Stephen W. Hawking's book "The universe in a Nutshell" talks briefly on the subject, I believe in the... 3rd chapter? Or if you are listening to the CD it is on the second, to the best of my knowledge...

I would quickly suggest Brian Greene, or even Michio Kaku, above Hawking. Try The Elegant Universe (by Greene).

3I/ATLAS, also known as C/2025 N1 (ATLAS) and formerly designated as A11pl3Z, is an iinterstellar comet. It was discovered by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) station at Río Hurtado, Chile on 1 July 2025. Note: it was mentioned (as A11pl3Z) by DaveE in a new member's introductory thread. https://www.physicsforums.com/threads/brian-cox-lead-me-here.1081670/post-7274146 https://earthsky.org/space/new-interstellar-object-candidate-heading-toward-the-sun-a11pl3z/ One...
Is a homemade radio telescope realistic? There seems to be a confluence of multiple technologies that makes the situation better than when I was a wee lad: software-defined radio (SDR), the easy availability of satellite dishes, surveillance drives, and fast CPUs. Let's take a step back - it is trivial to see the sun in radio. An old analog TV, a set of "rabbit ears" antenna, and you're good to go. Point the antenna at the sun (i.e. the ears are perpendicular to it) and there is...
