What is the Best Textbook for Introductory Atomic Physics?

AI Thread Summary
A third-year physics student seeks recommendations for a textbook on introductory atomic physics, having already completed advanced non-relativistic quantum mechanics courses. The student finds the book by Bethe and Salpeter valuable for looking up atomic level lifetimes and transitions, particularly in hydrogen, but notes it may be too advanced for their current needs. There is uncertainty about whether this book covers the Lamb shift. Recommendations should focus on suitable introductory texts that balance accessibility with comprehensive coverage of atomic physics concepts.

Hello,

I'm a third year physics student. I am looking for a good textbook on introductory atomic physics, considering the fact that I've already had some advanced non-relativistic quantum mechanics courses.

I don't ask for much. A title and a very short explanation on why you think this book is the best will do fine.

Thanks a lot!

The best book I found on atomic physics is the book by Bethe and Salpeter, but it is advanced. Every time I need to look up the lifetime of atomic levels and transitions (e.g., 2p -> 1s) in hydrogen, I go to this book. I have forgotten whether it covers the Lamb shift.

Hi, I have notice that Ashcroft, Mermin and Wei worked at a revised edition of the original solid state physics book (here). The book, however, seems to be never available. I have also read that the reason is related to some disputes related to copyright. Do you have any further information about it? Did you have the opportunity to get your hands on this revised edition? I am really curious about it, also considering that I am planning to buy the book in the near future... Thanks!
