AI Thread Summary
Long-distance phone calls are more expensive than local ones primarily due to marketing perceptions that assign greater value to them, allowing operators to charge premium prices. Additionally, the infrastructure required for long-distance communication is more complex and costly to build and maintain compared to local networks. Factors such as the need for advanced demodulation techniques and bandwidth allocation also contribute to higher costs. Overall, both economic and technical aspects play significant roles in the pricing of long-distance calls. Understanding these factors can clarify why consumers face higher charges for long-distance communication.

Hey everyone,

I would like the answer to the above question from an engineer's perspective. So what makes long-distance phone calls more expensive than local ones? I guess the distance over which the message must be carried, but what else? more complex demodulation techniques? bandwidht?

Thanks,
Lila

One of the main reasons is marketing, - people perceive a long distance call to hold more value than a local call; as a result the communications operators are able to premium price long distance calls.

Also, the infrastructure needed to build, integrate, and maintain a large-area network is more complicated (and more expensive) than that needed for a small-area network.

Thread 'Weird near-field phenomenon I get in my EM simulation'
I recently made a basic simulation of wire antennas and I am not sure if the near field in my simulation is modeled correctly. One of the things that worry me is the fact that sometimes I see in my simulation "movements" in the near field that seems to be faster than the speed of wave propagation I defined (the speed of light in the simulation). Specifically I see "nodes" of low amplitude in the E field that are quickly "emitted" from the antenna and then slow down as they approach the far...
Hello dear reader, a brief introduction: Some 4 years ago someone started developing health related issues, apparently due to exposure to RF & ELF related frequencies and/or fields (Magnetic). This is currently becoming known as EHS. (Electromagnetic hypersensitivity is a claimed sensitivity to electromagnetic fields, to which adverse symptoms are attributed.) She experiences a deep burning sensation throughout her entire body, leaving her in pain and exhausted after a pulse has occurred...
