What makes work positive (electricity)

AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on understanding the nature of work done on electric charges. When charges are brought together, the work done depends on whether the forces are attractive or repulsive. For attractive forces, work is positive and potential energy is negative, while for repulsive forces, work is negative and potential energy is positive. The relationship is explained through the concepts of force and displacement, emphasizing the role of conservative forces. Clarifying these concepts is essential for grasping the principles of electric potential energy.

I don't really understand the concept of what makes work positive or negative for example if 3 charges are brought together from infinite what is the work done on them?

I am extremely confused about what make work positive and negative.

Hi Eats Dirt!

Potential energy = minus the work done by a conservative force.

And work done = force "dot" displacement

so if the charge is attractive (like gravity), the force is in the same direction as displacement, so the work done by the force is positive, and the potential energy difference is negative

but if the charge is repulsive, the force is in the opposite direction to displacement, so the work done by the force is negative, and the potential energy difference is positive

Thread 'Motional EMF in Faraday disc, co-rotating magnet axial mean flux'
So here is the motional EMF formula. Now I understand the standard Faraday paradox that an axis symmetric field source (like a speaker motor ring magnet) has a magnetic field that is frame invariant under rotation around axis of symmetry. The field is static whether you rotate the magnet or not. So far so good. What puzzles me is this , there is a term average magnetic flux or "azimuthal mean" , this term describes the average magnetic field through the area swept by the rotating Faraday...
