SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on the appropriate type of cable for retrofitting recessed lighting in residential settings. Participants emphasize the necessity of using a three-wire cable configuration (black, white, and green) to ensure compliance with safety codes. A 20A circuit is deemed sufficient for most lighting applications, although adherence to local electrical codes is crucial for passing inspections. Participants recommend consulting local building departments for specific requirements and regulations.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of electrical wiring color codes (black, white, green)
  • Familiarity with local electrical codes and safety regulations
  • Knowledge of circuit amperage ratings, specifically 20A circuits
  • Experience with retrofitting lighting systems in residential properties
NEXT STEPS
  • Research local electrical codes for recessed lighting installations
  • Learn about the National Electrical Code (NEC) standards
  • Explore best practices for wiring and circuit safety in home renovations
  • Investigate the differences between various types of electrical cables (e.g., NM-B, UF)
USEFUL FOR

This discussion is beneficial for homeowners, electricians, and DIY enthusiasts involved in retrofitting lighting systems, as well as anyone seeking to ensure compliance with electrical safety standards during home renovations.

I am putting in recess lighting in my house, I am retrofitting it, not a new build. I want to find out what kind of cable I should use to hook up the lights. I take that it should be 3 wires ( Black, white and green) in one type. Is 20A good enough? Of cause I am not using close to 20A, but I want to do it right so I can even pass the safety code inspection. Please advice.

Thanks

If you want to follow your local rules for electrical installation then you really should read them. They vary from country to country and I think they are available wherever you are. Wire colouring and fusing requirements all vary around the World. 'Common sense' is not enough to satisfy an inspector!

It is good that you are going to have it inspected and signed off when you are done. As centaur says, you need to check with that building department (that will be the one to sign off on the work) to find out what your local electrical codes require.
