AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on the educational path of a secondary education mathematics major considering additional qualifications to enhance marketability as a teacher. The individual is contemplating a second major in Mathematics or a minor in Physics, alongside an existing biology minor, and aims to obtain certification for teaching Math and Biology, with the possibility of adding Physics. Suggestions include pursuing a second major or minor, but also highlight the potential benefits of adding a Computer Science qualification, which could open opportunities to teach media-related subjects. The focus is on maximizing credentials to improve job prospects in the teaching field.

I am a secondary education mathematics major and I have 3 more years left at a Pennsylvania University. I am considering adding a second major in Mathematics and/or a minor in Physics. I already have a biology minor. I plan on getting certified to teach Math and Biology (and Physics if I minor). Which do you think looks better, a second major, a second minor, or both? Or is there something else you would do to be more marketable as a teacher?

How about computer science as a backup and it would allow you to be a media teacher too?

I’ve been looking through the curricula of several European theoretical/mathematical physics MSc programs (ETH, Oxford, Cambridge, LMU, ENS Paris, etc), and I’m struck by how little emphasis they place on advanced fundamental courses. Nearly everything seems to be research-adjacent: string theory, quantum field theory, quantum optics, cosmology, soft matter physics, black hole radiation, etc. What I don’t see are the kinds of “second-pass fundamentals” I was hoping for, things like...
TL;DR Summary: I want to do a PhD in applied math but I hate group theory, is this a big problem? Hello, I am a second-year math and physics double major with a minor in data science. I just finished group theory (today actually), and it was my least favorite class in all of university so far. It doesn't interest me, and I am also very bad at it compared to other math courses I have done. The other courses I have done are calculus I-III, ODEs, Linear Algebra, and Prob/Stats. Is it a...
