Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the observation of visual effects when viewing a PC display through polarized sunglasses. Participants explore the implications of polarization and the differences in performance between various sunglasses.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant notes that viewing a PC display through polarized sunglasses results in a darker image, suggesting a relationship between the screen's polarization and the sunglasses.
  • Another participant explains that if the display is an LCD, the light emitted is polarized, and tilting the head creates an effect similar to crossed polarizers, which can block light.
  • A participant questions the polarization of their wife's expensive sunglasses, noting that they do not observe the same effect as with their own cheaper polarized sunglasses.
  • There is a suggestion that the orientation of the head tilt (up or down versus left or right) may influence the visibility of the display through the sunglasses.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing experiences with the polarization effects of sunglasses, indicating that there is no consensus on the performance of different sunglasses or the impact of head tilt orientation.

Contextual Notes

Unresolved questions include the specific polarization characteristics of the expensive sunglasses and how different angles of head tilt affect visibility.

When I am looking with my sunglasses to PC display I see darker image. Then I turn my head 45 degrees and I do not see anything. Why?

Because the light from the screen is polarized (I am assuming it is an LCD) , and you are using polarizing sunglasses.
Tilting your head is therefore analogous to crossed polarisers, it will block all light.

ok so my cheap sunglasses(6 euros) are polarized.
But then if I do the same with my wife glasses really expensive (200 euros)D§G i do not see any effect. Are they not polarized?

possibly not

Wouldn't it make a difference if you tilt your head up or down 45 degrees instead of left or right 45 degrees?
