AI Thread Summary
When faced with mild fatigue, the choice between coffee and a short nap sparks a debate on health impacts and productivity. While naps are generally considered less unhealthy, they can disrupt sleep cycles, making them a less viable option for some. Coffee, though a stimulant that can lead to sleep issues, is often preferred for its immediate energizing effects, especially in work environments where tasks like writing or grading are required. The discussion highlights that personal circumstances, such as work type and environment, significantly influence the decision. Some participants express a preference for naps but acknowledge that they often resort to coffee due to time constraints or the need to remain productive. Overall, the conversation underscores the balance between health considerations and practical work demands when choosing between these two options.

If you had the choice between drinking coffee or taking a short nap when feeling (a little) tired which would you think is the best, provided time is not an issue?

A little is used because if you were extremely tired then a nap is the way to go.

The question is another way of saying which is the least unhealthy. Both can lead to addictions but which is worse? Nap can lead distortion of sleep cycles and coffee is a drug, which may also lead to sleep problems.

I think we should go the way of Italy, Mexico, etc, where business shuts down in the early afternoon so everyone can go home and take a nap. Instead, I have to bring up my special screen saver that 'types' characters on the screen and makes typing sound effects. Works great as long as my face isn't lying on the keyboard. Of course, even that works as long as I can sell 'typing with my nose' as a special skill.

which is least unhealthy is definitely a nap, however, having a cup of coffee might be unhealthier it still isn't all that unhealthy. You should have included crystal meth in your poll then we could have a clear winner in the unhealthy category.

I would much rather take the coffee. The only time I take the nap over coffee is when I am really sick and then everyone knows it too.

I prefer naps, though most of the time just settle for coffee: I can't sleep every time I'm a little tired, else I wouldn't get anything done!

Shouldn't the title of the poll be "Which is healthier"? Your title is misleading...

I have an issue with falling asleep for the night whenever I take a nap.

I need more caffeine in my diet!

It depends on the work I need to do. If I just need to write an essay, do some grading, etc... I'll do the coffee. If I need to be able to think about how to solve a Jackson problem, I'll take a 10 minute nap.

I like a nice nap now and again, but it depends upon the environment. Sometimes conditions aren't compatible with falling asleep.

If I work outside, I do not feel like a nap, so a coffee. But in my office, I ALWAYS take a very short nap : 10 min , say.
