Why Doesn't MathType Recognize Dirac's Bra-Ket Notation?

AI Thread Summary
MathType does not recognize Dirac's bra-ket notation, leading users to resort to images for equations. The discussion highlights a user's attempt to prove a mathematical statement, noting a typo in their solution regarding complex conjugates. A moderator suggests moving the thread to Advanced Physics, indicating the complexity of the topic. LaTeX is recommended as a workaround for bra-ket notation, with specific commands provided for proper formatting. However, users still face challenges with scaling the notation for larger expressions.

Hey guys I'm new here and I've been using MathType for all on-screen math. For some reason PF doesn't recognize the built-in Dirac's bra-ket notation. (i.e. <\psi|) So I've included my equations and solution in the format of images, hopefully it isn't a problem.

Sorry I just realized a typo in my solution, but it doesn't affect the result:
The typo is at where I said: "Then I moved on to the right side:"
\alpha^*=6-5i

\beta=1+i
The beta should have a complex conjugate symbol (*):
\beta^*=1+i
In your initial calculation of < \alpha \omega |, the middle term is wrong. I haven't checked over your math any further than that and the < \beta \omega | calculation.

p.s. Moderator's note: I am moving this to Advanced Physics -- it doesn't really look like Introductory level physics to me, which we consider to be through (U.S.) college sophomore level.

p.p.s. In LaTeX, simply typing "<", "|", and ">" for bras and kets seems to work okay, but not great.

As another \LaTeX option is to use the /langle and /rangle together with "|" to do Dirac bra-ket notation.

For example,
Code:
[tex] \langle x | y \rangle [/tex]
yields
\langle x | y \rangle

[Edit: I still can't get them to scale up automatically though, in case the things in the bras and kets are larger and more complicated.]

Thread 'Help with Time-Independent Perturbation Theory "Good" States Proof'
(Disclaimer: this is not a HW question. I am self-studying, and this felt like the type of question I've seen in this forum. If there is somewhere better for me to share this doubt, please let me know and I'll transfer it right away.) I am currently reviewing Chapter 7 of Introduction to QM by Griffiths. I have been stuck for an hour or so trying to understand the last paragraph of this proof (pls check the attached file). It claims that we can express Ψ_{γ}(0) as a linear combination of...
