Why is Mohr's circle labeled clockwise and not anticlockwise?

Click For Summary
Mohr's circle is labeled clockwise to maintain consistency with the sign convention for shear and normal stresses. The angle θ p is defined in this manner to align with the positive direction of rotation in engineering mechanics. The maximum normal stress is located at point A because it corresponds to the principal stress orientation, while point B represents the minimum stress. Although it is possible to label maximum and minimum stresses at other points, doing so would not accurately reflect the principal stress values. Understanding these conventions is crucial for correctly interpreting stress states in materials.

Homework Statement

a.)why the angle θ p is in clockwise direction? why shouldn't it be in anticlockwise direction?

b.) I have labelled A,B ,C and D...Why the maximum normal stress is labelled at location A? while the min stress is labelled at location B?
Can I label the min and max stress at other location? Say, max stress a t C , min stress at D? I don't understand why the the author label the max and min stress in that way...
