AI Thread Summary
Mechanical engineering education in India includes practical skills like filing, hacksawing, and carpentry to provide foundational knowledge essential for understanding manufacturing processes. This hands-on experience is crucial for grasping the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of designs, as well as ensuring operability in real-world applications. Students often find that practical skills enhance their ability to communicate effectively with technicians and understand design limitations. While initial coursework may seem tedious, it lays the groundwork for more advanced concepts and enjoyable projects later in the program. Emphasizing the importance of foundational skills can lead to a more fulfilling educational experience in mechanical engineering.

Hi Everyone,

I am a mechanical engineering student, But I just don't understand why do we need to know filing, Hacksawing, cutting etc. and carpentry work ? I am in my first year and I just finished a semester, but I don't really know why we needed to do all that last semester , I mean I don't get the point. I was really looking forward to Mechanical Engineering being fun , but it doesn't turn out that way. Is it like that in your country? I am doing my Mech. Engg in India btw.

Also what else do I expect in the future? I want to just go a bit ahead of what we are doing now so just wondering .

It's always better to understand what you will be asking others to try and do. Understanding the manufacturing methods will let you understand why certain parts might be more cost effective/feasible.

Another reason can be that if you are designing something that someone has to use (especially if it's not very often) it helps to understand that it needs to be operable. In the chemical industry I have seen many times where something that somebody thought was practical was completely useless (ie a bypass for a control valve that is completely inaccessible, or supports that prevent removal of equipment).

I have no idea what you can expect of your future education in India.

Mechanical Engineering is fun...just make sure u do not miss the KEYWORDS ur Prof use :)

Posted June 2024 - 15 years after starting this class. I have learned a whole lot. To get to the short course on making your stock car, late model, hobby stock E-mod handle, look at the index below. Read all posts on Roll Center, Jacking effect and Why does car drive straight to the wall when I gas it? Also read You really have two race cars. This will cover 90% of problems you have. Simply put, the car pushes going in and is loose coming out. You do not have enuff downforce on the right...
Thread 'Physics of Stretch: What pressure does a band apply on a cylinder?'
Scenario 1 (figure 1) A continuous loop of elastic material is stretched around two metal bars. The top bar is attached to a load cell that reads force. The lower bar can be moved downwards to stretch the elastic material. The lower bar is moved downwards until the two bars are 1190mm apart, stretching the elastic material. The bars are 5mm thick, so the total internal loop length is 1200mm (1190mm + 5mm + 5mm). At this level of stretch, the load cell reads 45N tensile force. Key numbers...
I'm trying to decide what size and type of galvanized steel I need for 2 cantilever extensions. The cantilever is 5 ft. The space between the two cantilever arms is a 17 ft Gap the center 7 ft of the 17 ft Gap we'll need to Bear approximately 17,000 lb spread evenly from the front of the cantilever to the back of the cantilever over 5 ft. I will put support beams across these cantilever arms to support the load evenly
