Graduate Observing Bright Stars: Project Checkup
I've been asked by my astrophysics lecture to conduct an observing project of Bright Stars, using the time at which they transit the meridian to locate them on the sky. I was just wondering if you could check my "thoughts" so far? The Hour Angle of a star is 0 at the time it crosses the...- Berdi

Undergrad Temperature/Resitance Relation?
In a few of my undergraduate lab sessions, we have been given a formula in the lab script; \[R=R_{20}(1+\alpha T+\beta T^{2})\] Where Alpha and Beta have varied depending on the experiment. For example, to calculate the temperature of a cathode, at resitance R, \[\alpha \] was 5.24x10-3 and...- Berdi

Cepheid Variables and the Small Magellanic Cud
Homework Statement The Galactic Cepheid variable δ Cephei has a parallax of 0.0033 arcseconds. An astronomer locates another Cepheid, with the same period as δ Cephei, in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). If this Cepheid appears 11.5 magnitudes fainter than δ Cephei, calculate the distance to...- Berdi

Convergence of Taylor Series for Various Functions
Homework Statement For what values of x (or \theta or u as appropriate) do you expect the following Taylor Series to converge? DO NOT work out the series. \sqrt{x^{2}-x-2} about x = 1/3 sin(1-\theta^{2}) about \theta = 0 tanh (u) about u =1 Homework Equations The...- Berdi

Atomic Physics - rest mass of Deuterium
I think the problem arises in the fact that a Deuterium nucleus is a Proton and a Neutron, not 2 Protons, and the masses are slightly different.- Berdi

Undergrad Refractive Index: Methods for Determining Beyond Newton's Rings
So, I was in my Undergraduate Labs yesterday, using Newton's Rings to determine the Refractive index of water. I was just wondering, other than measuring the angles of incident and refracted beams, if there were many other methods to determine refractive index? -

Acceleration as a function of distance to Velocity?
Homework Statement A block of mass m lies on a rough surface, inclined at an angle \theta to the horizontal. It is attached to a spring of force constant k; the other end of the spring is fixed to point on the table below the block. The coefficient of static friction between the block and...- Berdi

Hydrogen -Energy State Transitions
Homework Statement Find the (algebraic) relationship between the wavelengths of the equivalent transitions (i.e. same n1 and n2) for hydrogen-like ions of atomic number Z and hydrogen itself. Homework Equations I know: h\nu (n_{1} , n_{2} ) = C_{1}Z_{1}^2(\frac{1}{n_{2}^2} -...- Berdi

Refraction/Smallest curve of optical fibre.
Homework Statement "figure 3" (below) shows an optical fibre bent in a curve. The diameter of the fibre is 4mm. If light is not to escape, calculate the smallest radius of R of the curve round which the fibre can be bent. Assume that the fibre is surrounded by air (refractive index 1) and...- Berdi
