Improving chances for Theo. Phys. graduate studies ?

Twofish, thanks for the reply and additional advice! I'm glad it is possible to get into a well-ranked theoretical physics graduate program (granted, one possesses all other qualifications) without a duel mathematics degree. Otherwise, it would take me two extra semesters (at the LEAST) to...

Improving chances for Theo. Phys. graduate studies ?

First of all, I want to apologize in advance for contributing to the pollution of the forums by the "I want to be a Theoretical physicist...but how?" type threads. Honestly, I thoroughly searched for an answer to my question, but was unsuccessful in finding direct answers. With broad...

Which university in Kentucky has the best physics departments?

I am currently a Physics undergraduate at the University of Kentucky and I'm originally from Louisville. The Physics department is better here at UK (from what I could tell by touring and what I've heard from others), though I assume the undergraduate programs are pretty similar. I think the...

Schools Anyone familiar with the University of Manchester?

Wow, thanks for that link! You are right...I obviously didn't look properly. Yeah, I know I said I was going to ask for specifics then ended up being very vague with the questions, but you pretty much covered what I wanted to know, thanks.

Schools Anyone familiar with the University of Manchester?

I am currently a freshman at a university in the US, however I am considering studying in the UK to get an undergraduate Masters degree and I was wondering if anyone can give me some insight on Manchester or some university/colleges and their physics departments. I am not necessarily at a...

Solving Equation x= (1+c+a)/(2-a): Need Help!

Sorry to waste your time Borek. I noticed another error I made in my earlier calculations which screwed the whole problem up (so everyone, ignore my previous posts! haha). Since then I have fixed it and have the correct solution. Thank you anyway for your help! -Ford

Solving Equation x= (1+c+a)/(2-a): Need Help!

Never-mind. I got "2-a" as my denominator now :) . I didn't think to separate the "1" into "(2(1/2))", so that the "1/2's" could cancel out. Although, if I had not done that, and I just divided the "1/2" in the numerator, by the "1" in the denominator, to get "1/2-a", why exactly would it...

Solving Equation x= (1+c+a)/(2-a): Need Help!

I am getting x = (1+c) / (1/2-a) Is everyone else getting the "2-a" as the denominator as it was stated in the solution posted?

    Thank you very much Cthugha!

Why Was "h" Chosen for Planck's Constant?

Planck's Constant..."h" I am wondering if anyone knows why "h" was chosen for Planck's Constant? Or did they just randomly select a letter which didn't represent a constant at the time? Thanks. -Ford

Programs Extra Mathematics Courses for Undergraduate Physics Degree

Thanks for the help Vanadium and ekrim. Vanadium, I don't know if your question was directed at me or ekrim (I assume ekrim since you addressed him prior, but just in case I'll answer it anyway), but I am not a physicist. However, it is my major and I start in a month or two.

Programs Extra Mathematics Courses for Undergraduate Physics Degree

The BS degree for physics at the university (Kentucky) I will be attending has 'Calculus I-IV', as the only mathematical requirements. In addition to the calculus courses, I will be taking 'Matrix Algebra & Applications'. My question is, what are other mathematics courses that are helpful...

Exploring Physics and Scheduling Calculus Courses

Thanks for the input...I am afraid that it would set me back as well. It would probably be in my best interest to do University Physics and Calculus I both during my second semester. Maybe on winter break before my second semester I can study some basic calculus on my own in order to prepare...

Exploring Physics and Scheduling Calculus Courses

Wow, thanks for all the quick help everyone! I think that I will travel the algebra/trigonometry route instead of the pre-calculus just to get a more in-depth "review" of the mathematics. I will be taking the college algebra course over the summer, then the trigonometry/analytical geometry...
