Is the Hippocampus Located on the Floor or in the Middle of the Temporal Lobe?

AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on the anatomical location of the hippocampus within the temporal lobe. It clarifies that the hippocampus is situated just below the middle of the temporal lobe, rather than at its floor. This position is further distinguished by the presence of the parahippocampal gyrus, a three-layered cortex that separates the hippocampus from the bottom of the temporal lobe. For accurate visualization, references to coronal sections from brain atlases, such as those by Duane Haines, are recommended, as they provide clear images of the hippocampus's location in relation to other brain structures.

Is the Hippocampus on the Floor of the Temporal Lobe?

Or is it in the Middle of the Temporal Lobe?

Looks like on the middle of it.

The rat has a dorsal hippocampus. In the human, the hippocampus is just below the middle of the temporal lobe separated from the bottom by a little 3-layered cortex of rhinencephalon called the parahippocampal gyrus. You can go to Amazon.com, find the atlas of human anatomy by Duane Haines, and in preview view see where the hippocampus is in coronal (or transverse) sections of the brain. Seeing its position in the image will be the most accurate way to visualize its position.
