Calculate kw from positve and negative energy totals

AI Thread Summary
To calculate kW or kWh from the provided readings, the user needs to clarify the meaning of the positive and negative values associated with A, Q, and S energy totals. The discussion suggests that these values may represent the area under the power curve, and combining them could involve adding the absolute values together. The user expresses confusion regarding the time interval of the readings, as they are logged every 15 minutes, complicating the conversion to hourly values. Additionally, there is mention of the power triangle, indicating a need to balance the equations involving A, Q, and S. Overall, the user seeks guidance on accurately interpreting and calculating the energy metrics from the given data.

Hi can anyone tell me if I had the following readings how could I calculate kw or kwh. The readings were taken from an electricity meter which logged the values every 15 minutes and the values below are what were recorded in the first 15 minute period;

A+ Energy Total = 3920Wh
A- Energy Total = 3480Wh

Q+ Energy Total = 248560varh
Q- Energy Total = 2920varh

S+ Energy Total = 3920Wh
S- Energy Total = 7440Wh

Really what I need to figure out is how do you get the absolute values based on the positive and negative values.

Hi just realized I posted the wrong figures. They should be;

A+ Energy Total = 3920Wh
A- Energy Total = 3480Wh

Q+ Energy Total = 3960varh
Q- Energy Total = 2920varh

S+ Energy Total = 3920Wh
S- Energy Total = 7440Wh

Welcome to PF. Could you explain in a little more detail what the + and - are? AC power isn't typically expressed that way. If it's the positive and negative rms power (the area under the power curve on the positive and negative sides of the sine wave), then I would think you just add the two values together.

My problem is I don't know what the + and - are.

I think as the values have h after them they are hour values, but as the values are recorded every 15 minutes I am not sure what to do with them.
Also I believe the values A,Q and S make up the power triangle but I can't get the equation to balance if you square them.

I have tried adding them and squaring them but I still can't get it to balance.

Can anyone shed any light?

Hi all I have some confusion about piezoelectrical sensors combination. If i have three acoustic piezoelectrical sensors (with same receive sensitivity in dB ref V/1uPa) placed at specific distance, these sensors receive acoustic signal from a sound source placed at far field distance (Plane Wave) and from broadside. I receive output of these sensors through individual preamplifiers, add them through hardware like summer circuit adder or in software after digitization and in this way got an...
I have recently moved into a new (rather ancient) house and had a few trips of my Residual Current breaker. I dug out my old Socket tester which tell me the three pins are correct. But then the Red warning light tells me my socket(s) fail the loop test. I never had this before but my last house had an overhead supply with no Earth from the company. The tester said "get this checked" and the man said the (high but not ridiculous) earth resistance was acceptable. I stuck a new copper earth...
I am not an electrical engineering student, but a lowly apprentice electrician. I learn both on the job and also take classes for my apprenticeship. I recently wired my first transformer and I understand that the neutral and ground are bonded together in the transformer or in the service. What I don't understand is, if the neutral is a current carrying conductor, which is then bonded to the ground conductor, why does current only flow back to its source and not on the ground path...
