In summary, four individuals from Australia and East Asia have been abducted in Iraq by the Islamic Secret Army, according to a statement distributed in Samarra. The Australian government has activated a contingency plan and has hostage negotiators on standby, but has stated they will not negotiate with terrorists. There are also discussions about Canada's involvement in Iraq, with confusion about whether they are sending peacekeepers or not. Alexander Downer, the Foreign Minister, is in charge of the Australian Secret Intelligence Service.

Update.
AUSTRALIA has activated a contingency plan after reports two Australians had been taken hostage in Iraq, Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said today.

Mr Downer confirmed that part of the plan involved having hostage negotiators on standby, but said that did not mean the Government would negotiate with terrorists.
