Best fields enrouting to Relativity & Gravitation Ph.D?

AI Thread Summary
To specialize in general relativity, students should prioritize a strong foundation in both classical and quantum physics during their B.S. studies. Key areas of focus include classical mechanics, electromagnetism, and statistical mechanics, with an essential course in quantum mechanics to align with standard physics curricula. For graduate studies, students should seek programs that offer specialized research opportunities in general relativity. Engaging in coursework related to differential geometry and advanced theoretical physics is also beneficial, as these areas are crucial for understanding the mathematical framework of general relativity.

what kind of physics should I study to ultimately specialize in general relativity? what fields should i focus on in my B.S and M.S ?

I have heard multiple times that for their B.S. in Physics, students should focus more on quantum physics and have at least one class in quantum mechanics, which seems to be the standard physics curriculum at most schools. Then in graduate school, they can focus more on their desired topics. Some schools offer graduate study and research in GR.

Hey, I am Andreas from Germany. I am currently 35 years old and I want to relearn math and physics. This is not one of these regular questions when it comes to this matter. So... I am very realistic about it. I know that there are severe contraints when it comes to selfstudy compared to a regular school and/or university (structure, peers, teachers, learning groups, tests, access to papers and so on) . I will never get a job in this field and I will never be taken serious by "real"...
Yesterday, 9/5/2025, when I was surfing, I found an article The Schwarzschild solution contains three problems, which can be easily solved - Journal of King Saud University - Science ABUNDANCE ESTIMATION IN AN ARID ENVIRONMENT https://jksus.org/the-schwarzschild-solution-contains-three-problems-which-can-be-easily-solved/ that has the derivation of a line element as a corrected version of the Schwarzschild solution to Einstein’s field equation.
