Is Betelgeuse Already a Supernova?

AI Thread Summary
Betelgeuse, a red supergiant star, is experiencing significant shrinkage, indicating it may be on the verge of going supernova. As it is approximately 400 light-years away, it is possible that it has already exploded, but the light from the event has not yet reached Earth. The star is expected to be a type II supernova, which will be bright but not excessively so. Ongoing cycles of shrinkage and expansion are anticipated before it ultimately collapses. This situation raises intriguing questions about the timing and visibility of stellar explosions.

Betelgeuse! Betelgeuse! Betel-- BOOM!

Betelgeuse is definitely on the virge of going nova [core collapse]. The shrinking thing is a clue. Shrink and expansion cycles will likely occur for many more years before it gives up the ghost.

So technically, it could have exploded many years ago. We just can't notice it yet. I find that quite thought provoking.

Is a homemade radio telescope realistic? There seems to be a confluence of multiple technologies that makes the situation better than when I was a wee lad: software-defined radio (SDR), the easy availability of satellite dishes, surveillance drives, and fast CPUs. Let's take a step back - it is trivial to see the sun in radio. An old analog TV, a set of "rabbit ears" antenna, and you're good to go. Point the antenna at the sun (i.e. the ears are perpendicular to it) and there is...
