AI Thread Summary
The discussion revolves around the experience of purchasing Girl Guide cookies at the mall, highlighting confusion over the absence of popular varieties like Thin Mints and Samoas, which have been renamed in Canada. Participants express nostalgia for these cookies, sharing recipes and personal anecdotes about their appeal. There is a notable difference in cookie selections between the U.S. and Canada, with Canadians feeling deprived of certain flavors. The conversation touches on the fundraising aspect of cookie sales, revealing that a small portion of the proceeds goes to the girls' troops, while most funds support administrative costs. Some participants express frustration over the perceived inequity in how funds are allocated, while others emphasize their love for the cookies despite these concerns. The thread also includes humorous comparisons of cookie addiction to substance use, underscoring the cultural significance of these treats.

Buying GG cookies at the mall, the woman said all I have to do is choose which kind I like more.

Thought it was an odd question, with an obvious answer, but maybe the world (or at least PF) will surprise me.

Girl Guides, not Girl Scouts.

They renamed the somaos...I can't remember the new name at the moment. I was nearly in a panick when my niece read off the options and didn't list Somoas!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Girl_Guiding_and_Girl_Scouting" . They must have different cookies in different countries...makes sense, I guess, but there's no substitute for a Thin Mint.

Thin Mints and the butter cookies, like Lorna Doones.

Neither.

I like the Samoas (Caramel deLites). :approve:

Samoas, Thin Mints (in the freezer, which turns a thin mint into something like crack), and Tagalongs peanut butter that Evo mentioned)

The reason they sell them only seasonally? To stem the tide of obesity. :)

Americans get a whole other selection of Girl Guide cookies that Canadians don't get. We get two white cookies sandwiching white cream or two brown cookies sandwiching brown cream. That's it.

And if Dave knew anything, he'd know that the only part worth eating at all of any of it is the white cream.

You can make a great Samoa cake: scratch a basic sheet cake, hit it with Dulce de Leche in the batter, some coconut (unsweetened). Frost with a layer of homemade caramel (cream, sugar, pan) in thick drizzles, coconut, and then thick drizzles of chocolate ganache.

Proceed directly to inappropriate moaning sounds upon consumption.

Good god. You are so deprived.

I remember when I was in the Girl Scouts, an elderly couple down the street called my mom, saying that I hadn't been by to take an order. I figured that they were elderly and wouldn't want cookies. I didn't realize I was selling crack to addicts. They placed my largest order.

Oreo = Cocaine
GS Cookies = Freebasing.

And what is slang for a newly "cooked" batch of crack? "COOKIE!"

Coincidence? I think not.

Good grief! We should organize a charity drive to get some GS cookies up to our northern neighbors immediately. It's bad enough that you have to suffer through those winters (brrrrrrr), but to be denied Thin Mints...it's unimaginable!

I recall a few years ago, GGs switched to mint cookies for a while. I did not buy them.

They've now switched back to vanilla and chocolate (but a different manufacturer, that's why they look different).

Thank you.
It seemed obvious to me that the vanilla are the raison d'ete for GG coookies, but it occurred to me that there a tiny possibility that it may not be a universal belief.

My poll is illuminating.

So true. I went into a 12-step to kick my thin mint habit. (still recovering) I have a theory that they push the thin mints in socio-economically disadvantaged communities, following the marketing success of menthol cigarettes.

Winters, hah! It's snowing here today. So, um, take that humidity-overloaded middle of the country.

Yeah, I'll have to wander by and take a look at your country's GS/GG cookies one of these days, Lisa.

The only proper answer is to call some girl scouts in the US and get Thin Mints. Derp!

Where are you that it's snowing? It was a scorcher here. I was forced to stay out on the lake an extra hour or three.

Edmonton. Can you believe it? You guys can breathe for the humidity, and I had to turn the heat back on today.

Go Canada!

Man this entire week I was working outside for the full day basically. Then I went to my other job at night, it has been so hot... Even during the night time. I wanted to go fishing tomorrow at lake Erie cause the weather has been pretty great for a day of just chilling but I can't  I'm so sad.

++I voted Vanilla

+++Georgina that's weird that it snowed . Was it a lot?

I gave into the GGs standing outside a Canadian Tire, and got a pack with both vanilla and chocolate cookies. A friend of mine used to be a GG leader, here and once hooked me up with "the good stuff"--mint-stuffed cookies. Alas, I think she's too busy with the whole life thing (she got a full-time teaching position and married another friend of mine).

A friend / former student of mine posted an apropos picture:

...But he's in Red Deer, which may have gotten it worse than Edmonton did (a whole lot of slush and no real persistent snow).

I refuse to buy them after finding out the girls make very little money per box. I think the last time I hear it was only 22 cents. The majority of the money pays for professional staff and office buildings.

I understand they need this, but should find corporate or some other sponsor {like the boy scouts do}. So instead I donate food cards, for the supplies they need for their meetings and outings. I believe its a great program.

You're absolutely right. When I was a troop leader several years ago, I was amazed that we got to keep only 45 cents a box! Now I only buy box or two of the cookies, but I *always* donate a few dollars. Those poor girls work hard, they deserve more than they get.

I feel for them, but I NEED MY DAMNED COOKIES! Sorry girls, trickle-down economics doesn't work, now give me more thin mints so I can chase the minty dragon! :)

Wait they get to keep the money that they raise? I thought it was a fundraiser of some sort... hmmm.

No, my post was misleading - sorry. The $0.45 per box went to the girls' troop, not to them individually. The girls worked hard to earn money for the troop.

ooooh. Ok yeah that's what I had thought was occurring.

That's the thing with these types of fundraisers. The majority of the money normally doesn't end up going where it's being raised to go, which is a shame. I would assume that the staff of Girl Guides/Scouts gets a pretty decent pay cheque... some of it coming directly from this fundraising by the girls.

You see it all the time. For instance when wikipedia fundraises for money normally you can go and see where the money goes to. A large portion of it goes to pay their preeeettty high salaries. I mean, they do deserve it since they founded one of the greatest websites on the internet. But the fundraiser seems slightly misleading.

Really?

Whose staff and buildings? GG head office?

I don't care if they are made in the same manner as Slurm from Futurama, and delivered by indentured servants, they taste too good to care.

We have lots of grand-nieces, and my wife gets suckered into buying cookies every year. The last year or so, she has managed not to pay for those over-priced treats that we don't need, but I'm not claiming victory. She has "adopted" the grand-daughters of our neighbors and will do anything for them, and the elder one is approaching GS age. Ack!

The way it runs in the US, troops are grouped together into Councils. The Council where I am covers about 1/6 of Washington state. Each council has an office space, and too dang many employees, IMHO.

I suppose there are levels of organization above the Council level, all the way up to the National office (and beyond?), but I don't know about that first hand.
