AI Thread Summary
An extension spring can potentially be designed to be 20 inches long when unloaded and extend to 32 inches while supporting a load of 30-40 lbs. The feasibility of such a spring depends on specific engineering properties, which are not detailed in the discussion. Suggestions for sourcing include checking with companies like Century Spring or considering DIY solutions, such as modifying a garage door spring or winding a custom spring. The discussion emphasizes the challenges in finding commercially available options that meet these specifications. Overall, while possible, practical solutions may require creative modifications or custom fabrication.

Is it possible for an extension spring to be 20 inches long while unloaded, 32 or so inches long fully extended(12" max displacement), and have an initial load of 30-40 lbs? All other properties are virtually not important. If so, where could I buy them?

Anything's possible, but what companies will have available is kind of difficult to answer...

Could a hack work?

you could get a garage door spring, cut it to 20", then make a cable and washer jig to limit the extension.

You could also wind one yourself if worst came to worst.

I'm trying to decide what size and type of galvanized steel I need for 2 cantilever extensions. The cantilever is 5 ft. The space between the two cantilever arms is a 17 ft Gap the center 7 ft of the 17 ft Gap we'll need to Bear approximately 17,000 lb spread evenly from the front of the cantilever to the back of the cantilever over 5 ft. I will put support beams across these cantilever arms to support the load evenly
Thread 'What's the most likely cause for this carbon seal crack?'
We have a molded carbon graphite seal that is used in an inline axial piston, variable displacement hydraulic pump. One of our customers reported that, when using the “A” parts in the past, they only needed to replace them due to normal wear. However, after switching to our parts, the replacement cycle seems to be much shorter due to “broken” or “cracked” failures. This issue was identified after hydraulic fluid leakage was observed. According to their records, the same problem has occurred...
