AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on identifying a cactus, specifically questioning whether it is a pincushion or a barrel cactus. Participants note that there are multiple species within both categories, with one suggesting the scientific name for barrel cacti might be Ferrocactus. Characteristics such as spine density and rib prominence are considered for identification. The conversation highlights the importance of flower color and fruit pods in determining cactus species, with red flowers indicating a likely Ferrocactus. However, the original poster has not yet observed any flowers on their cactus.

but its mother plant looks something like this.

Or, one of the "barrels."

if it is a barrel then why its mother doesn't have as much spines as a barrel?

There are more species of "barrel" than one, just as there are more species of pincushion than one.

what is the scientific name of a barrel?

ferrocactus?

I suppose it belongs to the Echnopsis genera?

Looking at it, I'd call it "ferro." No color to very robust, vicious, sparse, spines on pronounced ribs.

What color are the flower petals? red==very likely genus Ferrocactus. Flowers and fruit pods are the best way to identify cactus.
