Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around seeking suggestions for a graduate-level project topic in the field of astronomy and cosmology. Participants explore various starting points and resources for identifying a suitable topic, particularly focusing on dark energy and the search for advanced civilizations.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses confusion about where to start in finding a project topic, mentioning an interest in dark energy and Hubble's observations.
  • Another suggests reviewing methods to detect advanced civilizations within a 100 light-year radius, proposing to first identify what to look for and then how to look for it.
  • There is a suggestion to check recent papers on arXiv for new ideas and topics.
  • Some participants discuss the role of the advisor in guiding the topic selection process, with one noting that the advisor only provided a general area of interest.
  • Questions are raised about whether the advisor provided any reading material to assist in topic selection.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on a specific project topic, and multiple perspectives on how to approach the topic selection process are presented.

Contextual Notes

Limitations include the lack of specific guidance from the advisor and the challenge of finding a unique project topic that has not already been explored.

What does your advisor think?

he wants me to read a lot and find a topic. But I'm little confused abt where to start.i started from hubbles obervations and mainly interested in various forms of dark energy.but do not know much about still existing problems in that area

Review and consider the existing means that we can use to detect the presence of advanced civilizations in the general (within 100 ly) stellar neighborhood.

This could be by electromagnetic or chemical means.

First figure out what to look for and then figure out how to look for it.

Did he give you any reading material? If not, why not ask him for a few suggestions?

He just mentions the area.
I'm to find the reading material and topic.
He then approves or disapproves my topic.

try http://arxiv.org/list/astro-ph/new every day the newest papers are on there. Is this just for a course? How much 'work' are you supposed to do? It's pretty hard to find something really small that 'needs to be done' (for the main reason that somebody would have don it by now).
