AI Thread Summary
Diamonds can be affected by acidic or alkaline liquids found in household cleaners, including toilet cleaners and nail polish removers. It's advised to keep diamonds away from corrosive substances like ammonia and bleach, as they can cause damage. However, a diluted solution of ammonia mixed with water is considered safe for cleaning diamonds. Regular maintenance is important, and using a commercial jewelry cleaner or a mild detergent is recommended. Concerns about potential cracks and scratches in diamonds are noted, but many users prefer to avoid wearing their jewelry during cleaning tasks to prevent any damage.

Well this is interesting, first link: "Therefore try to keep diamonds away from lotion, perspiration and other corrosive household cleaners such as ammonia or bleach cleaners", second link: "Clean your diamonds regularly using a commercial jewelry cleaner, a mix of ammonia and water, or a mild detergent". I guess pure ammonia is not good, but a dilute solution is fine? My jeweler also recommended a soapy solution of dishwashing detergent and ammonia (1:6) in warm water.

Yes I noticed that. I was struck too by the idea that there may be cracks and scratches in ones diamonds.

Hopefully the tiaras broaches don't require much maintenance.

I don't wear those while cleaning the toilet, so I guess it's a non-issue.

Similar to the 2024 thread, here I start the 2025 thread. As always it is getting increasingly difficult to predict, so I will make a list based on other article predictions. You can also leave your prediction here. Here are the predictions of 2024 that did not make it: Peter Shor, David Deutsch and all the rest of the quantum computing community (various sources) Pablo Jarrillo Herrero, Allan McDonald and Rafi Bistritzer for magic angle in twisted graphene (various sources) Christoph...
Thread 'My experience as a hostage'
I believe it was the summer of 2001 that I made a trip to Peru for my work. I was a private contractor doing automation engineering and programming for various companies, including Frito Lay. Frito had purchased a snack food plant near Lima, Peru, and sent me down to oversee the upgrades to the systems and the startup. Peru was still suffering the ills of a recent civil war and I knew it was dicey, but the money was too good to pass up. It was a long trip to Lima; about 14 hours of airtime...
