AI Thread Summary
Publishing a scientific paper without citations and references is generally discouraged, even for innovative ideas. While it is acknowledged that groundbreaking work may not have direct precedents, referencing existing literature is crucial to contextualize the research and acknowledge previous efforts. The discussion highlights the importance of being well-read in the relevant field to identify appropriate references. Although some historical figures, like Einstein, published without citations, this approach is risky and not advisable for contemporary researchers. Proper referencing not only strengthens the credibility of the work but also situates it within the broader scientific discourse.

This is complete nonsense. Even the most innovative approach to any problem can reference the failed attempts of others.

Well, since you are wishing to publish a paper I assume that you are well-read on the literature in the appropriate field of study. What sort of references do they use?

Einstein got away without including any references in his famous 1905 relativity paper, but I'd be cautious of trying to emulate his example. :olduhh:

Hey, I am Andreas from Germany. I am currently 35 years old and I want to relearn math and physics. This is not one of these regular questions when it comes to this matter. So... I am very realistic about it. I know that there are severe contraints when it comes to selfstudy compared to a regular school and/or university (structure, peers, teachers, learning groups, tests, access to papers and so on) . I will never get a job in this field and I will never be taken serious by "real"...
