Can We Create an Electric Field Blocking Material Like Mu-Metal?

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion centers on the feasibility of creating a material that can block electric fields in a manner similar to how mu-metal blocks magnetic fields. Participants explore theoretical and practical aspects of electric field shielding, particularly in the context of materials with high magnetic permeability.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant questions the possibility of creating a material that can absorb electric fields, drawing a parallel to mu-metal's effectiveness against magnetic fields.
  • Another participant references the concept of a Faraday cage as a potential solution for blocking electric fields.
  • A different participant expresses concern about the interaction between high electric fields and a magnetic material, suggesting that the electric field could magnetize the shielding material.
  • A grounded conducting sheet is proposed as a method to block electric fields.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the best approach to create an electric field blocking material, and multiple competing views remain regarding the effectiveness of different methods.

Contextual Notes

The discussion highlights uncertainties regarding the interaction between electric and magnetic fields, as well as the specific properties required for effective electric field shielding materials.

Is it possible to create a material that will block an electric field like mu-metal blocks magnetic fields?

The trouble is, I want a material that can absorb an electric field (because i have a material with a very high magnetic permeability and i don't want a magnetic field ) but the electric field outside the "box" (i am thinking of making a box made of the electric shielding material with the magnetic material inside it) is very high, and i don't want the electric field magnetizing the electric shielding (which is likely to be magnetized because the electric field is very high).

A grounded conducting sheet will block an electric field.
