AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers around selecting a project topic in applied mathematics, specifically focusing on differential equations. Suggestions include exploring the Heat equation, Sturm-Liouville theory, and spherical harmonics. A participant shares an interesting example of modeling crime using differential equations, which involves predicting future crime events based on data from the Los Angeles Police Department. The conversation shifts towards a preference for topics related to biomathematics, with a suggestion to consider the protein folding problem as a potential project focus. Overall, the thread emphasizes the importance of applying mathematical concepts to real-world scenarios, particularly in the fields of crime prediction and biomathematics.

Choose a topic for my my project. please help

Hello There,

I am doing a Project next semster and my supervisor has asked me to choice a topic.

I do maths and I would like to a project in Applied maths say Differential equations or so.

Please help me with choosing a topic.

Thank you

The Heat equation?
Sturm-Liouville theory?
Spherical harmonics?

Some more information could be helpful...

I recently attended a talk where some applied maths guys were modeling crime via differential equations. Kind of cool, actually. They had some data from the Los Angeles Police Department and were able to "predict" where future crime events would occur.

Hi micromass,

Thanks for your response.

Actually I need something related to Biomathematics.

Modelling and Biomathimatics

thank you.

Thats cool. I have to look up some articles about this.

Thanks alot:)

Mayhaps the protein folding problem?

Hey, I am Andreas from Germany. I am currently 35 years old and I want to relearn math and physics. This is not one of these regular questions when it comes to this matter. So... I am very realistic about it. I know that there are severe contraints when it comes to selfstudy compared to a regular school and/or university (structure, peers, teachers, learning groups, tests, access to papers and so on) . I will never get a job in this field and I will never be taken serious by "real"...
Yesterday, 9/5/2025, when I was surfing, I found an article The Schwarzschild solution contains three problems, which can be easily solved - Journal of King Saud University - Science ABUNDANCE ESTIMATION IN AN ARID ENVIRONMENT https://jksus.org/the-schwarzschild-solution-contains-three-problems-which-can-be-easily-solved/ that has the derivation of a line element as a corrected version of the Schwarzschild solution to Einstein’s field equation.
