AI Thread Summary
Starting the second year of undergraduate Physics, students have the opportunity to enroll in an additional class each semester without extra fees. There's a desire to maximize this opportunity, with considerations for courses in mathematics or computation, especially since a minor in mathematics will cover subjects like Complex Analysis and Topology. Suggestions include taking more linear algebra, which is deemed universally beneficial for advanced math and physics courses, or a course in scientific communication to enhance presentation skills. Programming classes are also recommended for their practical applications. It's important to balance course load to avoid overloading the schedule while making the most of this opportunity for additional learning.

Hi. I am going to start my 2nd year of undergraduate Physics this month. Here at my Uni you can apply, for no extra charge, to one extra class per semester, in any field of study. I regret I didn't do it last year, cause I was lazy, but now I really want to. Thing is, I have no idea what to pick. I was considering something in maths or computation, but I'm also taking a minor in maths, which will include most of the maths subjects I was interested on, like Complex Analysis and Topology. I also considered something on another field entirely, like Philosophy or something. I am a bit lost here, I could use some advice.

IMHO you can never learn too much linear algebra! It will be useful in every upper level math or physics class.

Or take a course in scientific communication/presentations - these skills are always useful.

A physics professor of mine once said that "You can never take too much math".

So I would personally go for the extra math course.

But if there is some programming class available, that could also prove tremendously helpful.

Careful you don't overload your schedule.

TL;DR Summary: I want to do a PhD in applied math but I hate group theory, is this a big problem? Hello, I am a second-year math and physics double major with a minor in data science. I just finished group theory (today actually), and it was my least favorite class in all of university so far. It doesn't interest me, and I am also very bad at it compared to other math courses I have done. The other courses I have done are calculus I-III, ODEs, Linear Algebra, and Prob/Stats. Is it a...
