AI Thread Summary
The discussion revolves around selecting three electives for a computer science student who is inclined towards physics but recognizes the importance of mathematics for computational skills. The student expresses a preference for courses in optical physics, relativity, and is undecided on the third elective. There is a significant emphasis on the value of mathematics in enhancing computational abilities, with suggestions to consider advanced math courses like data structures and theory of computation. Participants highlight the importance of foundational physics courses, noting that while physics may not directly apply to computer science, it can be intellectually rewarding. Recommendations include courses such as the Physics of the Universe, Special & General Relativity, and Quantum Mechanics, alongside the suggestion to prioritize math electives for their practical applications in the field of computer science.

i have 3 electives to take and i am not very much convinced which one to take..since i am in Comp. science even then i am preferring to go all the 3 electives in physics but somewhere i feel that i should take maths because that will give computational power...So the list goes as :the list is bit long and i have 3 choices to make::

i want to take optical physics, relativity, and one still undecided..i actually don't like maths but i realize its power ...

Can't help you there, but WOW! Where do you get so many electives in India? IIT?

Okay i am modifying my questions..Please answer now according to your experience..

Which 4 physics courses contributed you most ..i mean most important that are indispensable..

if I were you, Id take the math classes. Being in CSI, some adv math will prove useful in the future.

MTH303 DATA STRUCTURES
MTH401 THEORY OF COMPUTATION
MTH409 COMPUTER PROGRAMMING AND DATA STRUCTURES

if you want to go for physics classes (which would of course end up being useless in CSI, but if you enjoy them you can always take em):
PHY305 PHYSICS OF UNIVERSE sounds interesting, though vague
PHY407 SPECIAL & GENERAL RELATIVITY
PHY431 QUANTUM MECHANICS I

Hey, I am Andreas from Germany. I am currently 35 years old and I want to relearn math and physics. This is not one of these regular questions when it comes to this matter. So... I am very realistic about it. I know that there are severe contraints when it comes to selfstudy compared to a regular school and/or university (structure, peers, teachers, learning groups, tests, access to papers and so on) . I will never get a job in this field and I will never be taken serious by "real"...
Yesterday, 9/5/2025, when I was surfing, I found an article The Schwarzschild solution contains three problems, which can be easily solved - Journal of King Saud University - Science ABUNDANCE ESTIMATION IN AN ARID ENVIRONMENT https://jksus.org/the-schwarzschild-solution-contains-three-problems-which-can-be-easily-solved/ that has the derivation of a line element as a corrected version of the Schwarzschild solution to Einstein’s field equation.
