Condensation in vacuum container

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the issue of condensation forming inside a vacuum-sealed lens due to residual moisture from rinsing a component before assembly. The user, Ian, seeks solutions to eliminate the condensation, considering options like using rice or silica gel for drying. However, there is uncertainty about whether these methods would be effective without creating an access point, such as drilling a hole in the lens body. The consensus suggests that while silica gel can absorb moisture, proper access for placement is necessary.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of vacuum sealing techniques
  • Familiarity with optical lens assembly
  • Knowledge of moisture absorption methods, specifically silica gel
  • Basic skills in handling epoxy adhesives
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the effectiveness of silica gel in vacuum environments
  • Learn about safe methods for drilling into optical components
  • Investigate alternative moisture removal techniques for sealed lenses
  • Explore best practices for assembling vacuum-sealed optical devices
USEFUL FOR

Optical engineers, hobbyist lens makers, and anyone involved in the assembly of vacuum-sealed optical components will benefit from this discussion.

Hi,

I'm building a lens and stupidly rinsed one component before putting the lens body together with epoxy glue. Now when I leave the lens in the sun the trace of water left in the vacuumed lens body turns into condensation and blurs out the vision. I've seen loads of forums suggesting using rice or silica to dry it out, will this work for me? Or will I need to drill a hole in the lens body to air it out again?

thanks
Ian

any help would be greatly appreciated

Wouldn't you have to drill a hole to put the silica/rice in as well?
