Music Cover songs versus the original track, which ones are better?

AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers around the merits of cover songs compared to their originals, exploring which covers are considered better and which should have been avoided. The subjective nature of evaluating music is emphasized, with opinions varying widely based on personal taste. Notable examples include Jimi Hendrix's cover of "All Along the Watchtower," which many argue surpasses Bob Dylan's original, and Johnny Cash's rendition of "Hurt," which evokes deep emotion. Other covers, such as those by Eva Cassidy and the Bare Naked Ladies, are praised for their unique interpretations that enhance the originals. Conversely, some covers are criticized for lacking originality or failing to add anything new, with specific songs mentioned as examples of covers that should have been left alone. The conversation also touches on the broader implications of musical interpretation, the role of the listener in evaluating art, and the complexities of genre classification, particularly in jazz. Overall, the thread highlights the rich landscape of music covers, showcasing both celebrated interpretations and those deemed unnecessary.

I'd say that Eddie does better without those other three guys cluttering it up.

His lead stuff is fun but he rules in backing guitar. And what do rock guitarists spend 90% of their time doing?

Damn that is amazing.

Gene Simmons tried to get his management to sign Van Halen off of that demo but no dice.

The last giant of jazz. So far anyway.

You haven't lived until you've heard Senri Kawaguchi play Teen Town.

Did you know he played drums on Teen town as well? As well as writing the song which is completely bonkers in terms of structure, not just the bass.

Luckily I had been exposed to a lot of Jazz before I heard it so it was not completely alien but it was certainly semi alien!
Everything about the track just takes you to somewhere you have never been before.

It is based on 13ths googling then he adds the #11th towards the end as it obviously neds to get even more chromatic!

The snare is so low in the mix and there is no damping at all on the bass drum by the sounds of it.

He does a roll that slows down as he plays it, like someone was applying breaks.

I would have liked to have heard more of his drumming.

his mind worked differently a true genius the way he approached music.

He was originally a drummer. Then he took up bass. He learned very quickly. The other guy in the band (The Woodchucks) was left behind.

He also played piano pretty well. That's how he knows so much about harmony. I'd recommend any young bass player who aspires to be Best In The World to also do that. There's only so much you can do with a bass guitar. Verdine White, same thing.

I should not laugh really, she could have already been abusing substances to prevent weight gain making her facial features stand out.
A unique, unparalleled tone to her voice.
Not bad drummer either.

Unbelievably beautiful voice. First time I heard "Don't know why" I was totally hooked.
Absolutely should have made efforts to see her live then. Too much going on.
I won't post the link here but I will put it on the music to lift my soul. A live version.
