CPU Deterioration: Do Computer Parts Decrease in Performance?

AI Thread Summary
Computer components such as CPUs and GPUs do experience performance degradation over time due to wear and tear. The extent of this degradation varies depending on the specific component and its usage. While users may not notice immediate slowdowns, as degradation progresses, it can lead to random failures, including crashes caused by errors, and ultimately result in the component ceasing to function. Overclocking can accelerate this degradation process, although wear occurs even without overclocking.

Do computer parts like the CPU and GPU sort of decrease in performance over time? If so, by how much?

Yep. Here's an article about how overclocking speeds up degradation(the fact that it speeds it up implies that it still happens without it): http://www.anandtech.com/show/2468/6

Yes, every component experiences wear.

It depends on the specific component. How much use it gets etc.

Just to clarify: there is degradation, but you won't really see a decrease in performance in the form of slowdowns, if that's what you meant. But as degradation gets worse, you will start to see random failures (crashes caused by errors within the part) and eventually the part will just stop functioning.

Thread 'ChatGPT Examples, Good and Bad'
I've been experimenting with ChatGPT. Some results are good, some very very bad. I think examples can help expose the properties of this AI. Maybe you can post some of your favorite examples and tell us what they reveal about the properties of this AI. (I had problems with copy/paste of text and formatting, so I'm posting my examples as screen shots. That is a promising start. But then I provided values V=1, R1=1, R2=2, R3=3 and asked for the value of I. At first, it said...
Sorry if 'Profile Badge' is not the correct term. I have an MS 365 subscription and I've noticed on my Word documents the small circle with my initials in it is sometimes different in colour document to document (it's the circle at the top right of the doc, that, when you hover over it it tells you you're signed in; if you click on it you get a bit more info). Last night I had four docs with a red circle, one with blue. When I closed the blue and opened it again it was red. Today I have 3...
