AI Thread Summary
To create a stage-ready lantern that produces a tightly focused spot of light from a distance of 12m horizontally and 5m vertically, specific optical components are required. The available parts include various light bulbs, holders, wiring, convex lenses with focal lengths of 2cm, 10cm, and 50cm, and concave mirrors with focal lengths of 5cm and 20cm. The design must ensure that the lantern fits within a 30cm long box while effectively utilizing the principles of Gaussian Beam Optics and the ABCD law for ray propagation. Proper selection and arrangement of these components will be crucial for achieving the desired light focus. This project presents an interesting challenge in optical engineering and design.

I am really stuck on what to do.

"The completed lantern needs to produce a tightly focussed spot of light on a stage, it is positioned 12m horizontally away from it and 5m above it. It also has to fit a box that is 30cm long"

Parts avaliable:
light bulbs
light bulb holders
wiring
convex lenses - focal lengths of 2cm, 10cm and 50cm.
concave mirrors - focal lengths of 5cm, 20cm

could anyone help me with what i have to do to create the lantern.

This would make an excellent Gaussian Beam Optics question using the ABCD law.
How well do you know your matrix techniques for ray propagation?

I think it's easist first to watch a short vidio clip I find these videos very relaxing to watch .. I got to thinking is this being done in the most efficient way? The sand has to be suspended in the water to move it to the outlet ... The faster the water , the more turbulance and the sand stays suspended, so it seems to me the rule of thumb is the hose be aimed towards the outlet at all times .. Many times the workers hit the sand directly which will greatly reduce the water...
