Amplitude of Piston in Horizontal Cylinder

AI Thread Summary
In a horizontal cylinder with a piston performing simple harmonic motion, the amplitude of the piston is not equal to the displacement amplitude of the medium, which is air in the cylinder. The medium itself does not move in the same way as the piston; it only expands and contracts due to the piston's motion. The displacement of the medium refers to the changes in pressure and density rather than physical movement. Understanding this distinction is crucial for analyzing the dynamics within the cylinder. The discussion clarifies the relationship between the piston's motion and the behavior of the medium.

consider horizontal cylinder in which piston is performing simple harmonic motion. Is the amplitude of piston is equal to displacement amplitude of elemnts pf medium i.e air in the cylinder.

I don't understand what you mean by "displacement of the medium." The medium in the cylinder is not moving, just expanding and contracting.

So I know that electrons are fundamental, there's no 'material' that makes them up, it's like talking about a colour itself rather than a car or a flower. Now protons and neutrons and quarks and whatever other stuff is there fundamentally, I want someone to kind of teach me these, I have a lot of questions that books might not give the answer in the way I understand. Thanks
