Job Skills DoE SULI Fall 2015: Waiting to Hear Back

AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers around the anxiety of applicants waiting for acceptance notifications for the SULI program, specifically at PNNL and LANL. The official notification period runs from June 8 to August 3, leading to heightened anticipation among candidates. One participant shares their experience of a friend who received an acceptance in mid-July after reaching out, suggesting that applicants may need to be patient and proactive. It is emphasized that the decision-makers are busy with other responsibilities, which can delay the review process. The conversation highlights the importance of managing expectations and the reality of waiting in a scientific career, where proposal and application writing are common.

I applied for the SULI program for this fall and I'm really antsy to find out if I got in or not. I applied at PNNL and LANL. Has anyone heard back about their acceptance yet?

Good heavens. The website says "offer notification period begins on or around" June 8th and goes on until August 3rd. If you are getting this antsy on the 13th, a career in science will drive you stark, raving bonkers.

If being antsy means you aren't fit for science, I should just drop my major now :)

Curly, last summer I roomed with a girl who applied for SULI at LANL in the fall. She heard back (accepted, but had to find her own research mentor) in the middle of July, but only after contacting them. If I were in your position, I'd maybe give them a call around the middle of July.

Give it some time. I applied and was accepted into one of the summer 2015 DOE internships at Fermilab. I didn't get my notification until fairly late in the notification period. Quit being antsy. There's a good chance that you won't hear anything for another month or so.

Keep in mind that the people making these decisions are currently training their summer interns, attending meetings, doing research, and fulfilling their many other obligations. Reviewing applications for interns is relatively low on their list of priorities.

A career in science requires a lot of proposal and application writing. Like I said, if waiting makes you antsy, one's career will be very unpleasant.

I don't know if anyone on here works for any of the well known defense companies of your country, whichever country you are from?? Also, if you choose to work in one, do you think the engineering education provide from your school would adequately prepare you for the job. What do I mean by that? Well if you work at say Lockheed Martin and you work in the latest iteration of a missile or if you work at Pratt & Whitney, they assign you to work in the team helping out with building the jet...
Hello, I graduated from undergrad a few years ago with a Major in Physics and minor in Electrical Engineering. I tried to get experience working on and testing circuits through my professor who studied Neutrinos, however covid caused the opportunity to go away and I graduated with no experience or internships. I have attempted to break into the engineering industry with no success. Right now I am considering going for a Masters in Electrical Engineering and I need advice on if this would be...
So lately, my interest in the realm of optics/optoelectronics/photonics engineering has grown and I have started to seriously consider pursuing a career in the field. I have done a bit of career research and also have done some learning on the side to gather more knowledge on these topics. However, I have some questions on what a career in these fields would look like, and I wanted to find out more about this area to know what I would be getting myself into if I did make the choice to pursue...
