AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on the potential astronomical threats to humanity's extinction. Participants suggest that the most significant risk comes from large meteor or comet impacts, which could lead to catastrophic climate changes and mass extinctions. A nearby supernova poses a lesser threat, primarily through harmful radiation affecting surface life. The least likely scenario discussed is a nearby gamma-ray burst, which would have devastating effects on the planet. Overall, the conversation highlights the importance of understanding these astronomical processes in the context of human survival.

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum,so please excuse my ignorance:smile:

I was reading through some of the threads in here and my mind is completely boggled!

Just wondering,in all your opinions, what astronomical process do you reckon will pose the greatest threat to man-kind in relation to extinction??I know it's a very broad topic but would love to see your opinions!

Cheers

At this rate, we won't have to worry about natural processes, because we will have destroyed ourselves long before.

Most likely - large meteor/comet impact. Happens every few 100million years. Big blast, clouds of dust, long winter. Wipes out 50-90% of species. Not good.

Less likely - nearby supernova. Radiation kills pretty much everything living on surface. Ok if you are a fish.

Least likely - nearby gamma ray burst (supernova on steroids). Radiation shreds planet like a butterfly hit by a shotgun. Game over.

Publication: Redox-driven mineral and organic associations in Jezero Crater, Mars Article: NASA Says Mars Rover Discovered Potential Biosignature Last Year Press conference The ~100 authors don't find a good way this could have formed without life, but also can't rule it out. Now that they have shared their findings with the larger community someone else might find an explanation - or maybe it was actually made by life.
TL;DR Summary: In 3 years, the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) telescope (or rather, a system of telescopes) should be put into operation. In case of failure to detect alien signals, it will further expand the radius of the so-called silence (or rather, radio silence) of the Universe. Is there any sense in this or is blissful ignorance better? In 3 years, the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) telescope (or rather, a system of telescopes) should be put into operation. This thread is dedicated to the beauty and awesomeness of our Universe. If you feel like it, please share video clips and photos (or nice animations) of space and objects in space in this thread. Your posts, clips and photos may by all means include scientific information; that does not make it less beautiful to me (n.b. the posts must of course comply with the PF guidelines, i.e. regarding science, only mainstream science is allowed, fringe/pseudoscience is not allowed). n.b.
