AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on whether electronic cigarettes will replace traditional cigarettes, similar to how DVD players replaced VCRs. There is skepticism about the safety of e-cigarettes, with concerns that claims of being a safer alternative may be driven by marketing rather than scientific evidence. The conversation highlights the importance of cost in determining the adoption of e-cigarettes. Additionally, there are regulatory issues, as e-cigarettes have been banned in some areas pending safety assessments by health authorities like Health Canada. Personal experiences are shared, particularly regarding the challenges of quitting smoking, especially for individuals with health conditions like COPD.

Peru was still suffering the ills of a recent civil war and I knew it was dicey, but the money was too good to pass up. It was a long trip to Lima; about 14 hours of airtime...
