AI Thread Summary
The experiment investigated the rate of transpiration under four different conditions: ambient, ambient with a fan, ambient with a lamp, and a combination of lamp and fan. The results showed that the highest transpiration rate occurred in the ambient condition (-0.367), while the combined lamp and fan condition yielded a lower rate (-0.198). This raises questions about the effectiveness of combining these two factors, as one might expect increased transpiration due to enhanced airflow and light. The experimental setup involved using a stem with large leaves submerged in water, connected to a pressure sensor for data logging over ten minutes for each condition. Suggestions for improvement included measuring standard deviation, considering fan-only and lamp-only conditions, and performing background measurements to better understand the results.

I've done an experiment on rate of transpiration in 4 conditions.
1) ambient
2) ambient + fan
3) ambient + lamp
4) lamp + fan

result: the rates are
1) -0.367
2) -0.233
3) -0.197
4) -0.198

why the rate on condition 1 is the highest but not condition 4?

What is your experimental setup, what is the standard deviation on the results, ... You should maybe have taken a fan-only and a lamp-only condition into account as well. Did you perform a background measurement?

the set-up of expt:
select a stem with large leaves and insert into a tube under water without bubbles
the other end of the tube is connected to the pressure sensor of potometer
by data logging, the pressure change with time is observed under the 4 conditions. each condition allows 10min data logging.

condition 1: ambient (under ambient laboratory condition)
condition 2: ambient + fan ( position the leaf in a draught from a fan )
condition 3: ambient + lamp (position leaf under the halogen light)
condition 4: lamp + fan ( with both lamp and fan )

I am reading Nicholas Wade's book A Troublesome Inheritance. Please let's not make this thread a critique about the merits or demerits of the book. This thread is my attempt to understanding the evidence that Natural Selection in the human genome was recent and regional. On Page 103 of A Troublesome Inheritance, Wade writes the following: "The regional nature of selection was first made evident in a genomewide scan undertaken by Jonathan Pritchard, a population geneticist at the...
