AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on the relationship between Fick's first and second laws of diffusion, specifically how the second law describes changes in concentration over time. It clarifies that the second law cannot be derived solely by taking the partial derivative of the first law; conservation of mass is also a critical factor in this derivation. The original poster seeks to understand the mathematical connection between these laws. The conversation emphasizes the importance of both laws in describing diffusion processes accurately. Understanding this relationship is essential for grasping the principles of mass transport in various scientific fields.

Hello,

I read on wikipedia that the second law represents how concentration changes with time, but I was wondering how taking the partial derivative with respect to x of the first law will give change in concentration with time?
