Formation of Babies' Brain & Smoking Effects

AI Thread Summary
The discussion addresses two primary questions regarding fetal brain development and the effects of maternal smoking and alcohol exposure. It highlights that a baby's brain begins to form during neurulation, which occurs shortly after gastrulation, with early neuronal structures developing from the ectoderm. The impact of maternal smoking is noted, particularly how nicotine stimulates acetylcholine receptors in the brain, leading to postnatal effects observed in studies with mice, which parallel findings in human epidemiological studies. These effects often manifest as hyperactivity and increased stress in children. Additionally, the potential consequences of a one-year-old consuming small amounts of beer are considered, with concerns about how even minimal alcohol exposure could affect brain development and function.

What happens if a baby of the age of about 1yr old drinks a small mouth full of beer just say one day and then a day the next week and a day or 2 after wards, or instead of taking a mouth of it dips her soother in a glass of beer 2 or 3 times? How would it effect their brain?

1. during neurulation right after gastrulation early neuronal structures arise from the ectoderm

2. nicotine stimulated acethylcholine receptors in the brain, the effects after birth that have been described in studies using mice

are similar to those seen in epidemiological studies in humans

a general feature is that these children are hyperactive and more stressed

I am reading Nicholas Wade's book A Troublesome Inheritance. Please let's not make this thread a critique about the merits or demerits of the book. This thread is my attempt to understanding the evidence that Natural Selection in the human genome was recent and regional. On Page 103 of A Troublesome Inheritance, Wade writes the following: "The regional nature of selection was first made evident in a genomewide scan undertaken by Jonathan Pritchard, a population geneticist at the...
I use ethanol for cleaning glassware and resin 3D prints. The glassware is sometimes used for food. If possible, I'd prefer to only keep one grade of ethanol on hand. I've made sugar mash, but that is hardly the least expensive feedstock for ethanol. I had given some thought to using wheat flour, and for this I would need a source for amylase enzyme (relevant data, but not the core question). I am now considering animal feed that I have access to for 20 cents per pound. This is a...
