Actually, Gallileo used his pulse to time pendula (actually, I believe, candelabra in a church).
 
He did use his pulse to time pendula.But thereafter he invented a mechine too.
Someone told me the name of the mechine , but I have forgotten it.
He also told me that it was known to very few person.
